When Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood debuted nationally in 1968, Americans needed messages of peace. Preceding years brought the Cold War, Civil Rights Movement, John F. Kennedy's assassination, and the Vietnam War into American living rooms. Every threat of violence seemed imminent and filled people with fear.
